Chicago's Historic Buildings

The City of Chicago and it's buildings:

(The marker for the McCormick Tribune Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum.)

(Late morning on Michigan Ave in Downtown Chicago.)

(The building with the clock is the Wrigley Building. Construction began in 1920 as the headquarters for the chewing gum company.)

(Tribune Tower construction began in 1923 after the company held an international architectural competition for "the most beautiful office building in the world.")

(Chicago River is beautifully teal because the city is taking great care to keep the river clean.)

(Chicago Riverwalk)

(Passed the bridge is Merchandise Mart, which when opened in 1930 it was the largest building in the world at 4,000,000 square feet. This "city within a city" now houses many home furnishing and apparel showrooms.)

(The red building with the clock is the Reid Murdoch Building. The cylindrical buildings to the right were made famous by Belushi's movie.)

(Two of the few surviving buildings from the Chicago Fire of 1871 were the Water Works and Water Tower buildings.)

(Gothic Water Tower stands across the street - juxtaposed with modern constructs - beginning the Magnificent Mile.)

The Windy City

Last week, I travelled to Chicago for a couple work events. While there, I decided to be a tourist in my free time.

My first day there, I took a quick stroll (although there was nothing quick about it) to Navy Pier. For $6, I hopped onto the ferris wheel, modeled after the very first ferris wheel, which was built in Chicago in 1893. This 7-minute ride took me up 150 feet with some neat views of the city.

Another stop I made it to was the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) Skydeck. My ears popped 4 times while taking the elevator up to the 99th story. (The Tower is 103 stories - but the top is closed until July for renovations.)

The cost is $14.95 for general adult admission and for $5 more you can get an audio tour. Look around online and at tourist boards, I found coupons for free audio tours with purchase of admission ticket. I enjoyed the audio tour, because instead of just looking out at the city, it pointed out the important and interesting buildings and their significance.

I think I will save the other things I did for tomorrow's post.

Girls's Weekend

This weekend, we celebrated KT's last 3 weeks of bachelorette-hood. KT, Amy (sissy), Amy (mase), Nikkie, Staci, and I went to the Finger Lakes.

Our cottage (a 3-bedroom house with 2 bathrooms) was in Geneva, N.Y. and had beautiful lake views of Seneca Lake.

Unfortunately, it rained on Saturday (the day planned for outdoor adventures). Luckily we had a Plan B -- stop at a bunch of wineries along the lake.

It was a nice weekend with the girls and, hopefully, KT had a wonderful time!

Can I just Tweet my Blog today?

  • I am so excited for the surprise bachelorette weekend for the future Mrs. Hammer. (Don't worry, I didn't spoil the surprise. She knows about the wkend, just not the location.)
  • Joe Paterno is in Erie today (first time in 10 years). Behrend is having a reception with him for our "friends" - I get to take the candid pics for our office.
  • Why is Joe in town? To rub elbows with the Manufacturing Association supporters and his friend, George W. Bush. *Grimace*
  • Did I mention my excitement for this weekend? Yes? Hm. Still excited... and a bit stressed.
  • Happy Birthday, M.C. Escher! You made the impossible, possible; explored infinity, architecture, and tessellations; and played with light and shadow.
  • I might get to do a give-away for All Modern (just won a vase from them). Stayed tuned.
  • Bought a really nice artificial orchid to put in the vase. It's light green with purple accents.
  • I am working on becoming a blogger for Savvy Grouse - a Pennsylvania tourism blog site. Need to decide on my niche, because I'm too all-over-the-board.
  • The 21st Annual Greek Festival at Erie's Greek Orthodox Church will be held July 10, 11 and 12th. Yum! (Same weekend as KT's wedding - ouzo for the bachelorettes! Opa!)
  • I went to the doctor's on Monday and got a shot. My arm still hurts.
  • My iPod's FM transmitter is still missing. I searched ALL my purses, my iPod sachet, my car's console, and my misc electronics container. *Sad Face* Where could it be?
  • Penelec over-estimated our electric use like crazy and then thought I was nuts (and wrong) when I called in with the actual reading. What a pain in the neck!
  • Roomie and I blew a fuse twice in two days. But never blew one in the last 8 months. Strange.
  • I completely over ate during my dad's weekend birthday celebrations (including leftovers this week). I hope my stomach can adjust back to the half of grapefruit and yogurt I packed for lunch.

Think these tweets are interesting. Read my actual ones over at @CelesteKCC.

Guess I AM Lucky

I recently won a give-away offered by my friend over at Amelia Grazia and sponsored by All Modern.

Thanks!

I got to choose from 4 home accessories (here's the blog post to view all four).

I was torn between the Henriette Melchiorsen Fine Salt and Pepper Set and the Pil Bredahl Simplicity Vase. I finally decided on the Simplicity Vase.

I just got the email saying the order is being processed and the delivery estimate is June 18-June 26.

So now I need to decide where to put the vase and what type of (artificial) flower I should put in it.

The locations are:

On the shelf, above the TV (the accessories have been moved around and a teal vase has been added since this photo):

On the end table, by the silver, rectanglar floor lamp (far left in photo) or on the high bar table (far right in photo):

If I put it above the TV, it will look really great near the wall mirror. And putting it on the end table will let it match with the lamp. And if I put it on the bar table, it will be showcased nicely, because nothing will be competing with it.

Anywhere I put it, it is really going to add to the silver accents we have throughout the room.

Where do you think I should place this awesome vase?
Oh yea, and what type of flower would look nice in it? I am leaning towards an orchid (because it looks good in that pic), a calla lilly, a teal flower (because thats our accent color), or a branch or twig.

I am so excited! Thanks again All Modern and Amy!

I'm not a beer drinker

How many times has someone uttered that phrase?

Saturday, Wegmans hosted a Kick off to Summer with a Beer and Food Pairing Event. Anyone 21+ could stop by any Wegmans stores in Pennsylvania to taste great beers and foods that complemented them.

I went. It was quite crowed, but a really neat event. They had 6 stations each with a beer and food combo. Not all the foods I tried, but I did drink each beer sample. And for a non-beer drinker like me, they went down very nicely.

Here are the stations, foods and beers, details on the beer, and why they paired well.

1) Hoegaarden Belgian White paired with Spicy Tuna Roll and California Roll.
Style: Belgian - Brewed in Portland, ME
Smooth, light bodied witbier, refreshing with tropical/spice notes.
Why it pairs:
Fruit and citrus notes echo the spiciness of tuna; light coriander/clove and tropical notes harmonize with the tang of vinegar in the rice and cut through the buttery-ness of the avocado.

2) Yuengling Lager paired with Steamed Clams and Sourdough Bread
Style: Lager - Brewed in Pottsville, PA
Medium-bodied lager with toast and cascade hops, less sweet than an ale.
Why it pairs:
Because the lager is used to steam the clams, there's a natural match in the flavors. The hops complement the garlic butter in the recipe. Sourdough bread is perfect for soaking up the remaining broth from the clams.

3) Victory V-Twelve paired with Mojo Pork Tenderloin with Black Beans and Salsa Verde
Style: Belgian Ale - Brewed in Downingtown, PA
Sweet taste of banana, pear, and toffee along with yeast/bread body
Why it pairs:
The complex flavor of the beer are not overshadowed by the many flavors of the dish. The sweet, yeasty flavors offset the black beans' spice.

4) Erie Brewing Presque Isle Pilsner paired with Chicken & Feta Sausage on a Whole Wheat Bun topped with Bruschetta
Style: Pilsner - Brewed in Erie, PA
Brewed with Czech Saaz and Classic American Cluster hops, producing delicate aromas with a malty balance.
Why it pairs:
Slight floral notes and a honey-like finish complement the spinach and feta in the sausage and accent the roll's flavor.

5) Stoudts American Pale Ale paired with 2-Year Grafton Reserve Cheddar on Baguette
Style: American Pale Ale - Brewed in Adamstown, PA
A good balance of malt, hops, and citrus with a firm, refreshing bitterness
Why it pairs:
The APA has enough character to stand up to the aged cheddar, which is made in Vermont using traditional methods. Grafton was recently named one of the top 100 cheddars by Wine Spectator Magazine

6) Lindemans Kriek Lambic paired with Sorbet
Style: Lambic - Brewed in Belgium
Kriek produces a subtle to intense cherry flavor in this sparkling fruit beer
Why it pairs:
The sweetness of the Lambic and the cool, tart flavor of the sorbet create the perfect summer spritzer.

My two favorites were #3 - Victory V-Twelve and #6 Lindemans Kriek Lambic. The V-Twelve was a strong beer; it was 12% alcohol per serving. It was compared to a brandy and sold in a bottle. I purchased a bottle of the Lambic and cannot wait to show my non-beer drinking friends how good this dessert beer tastes.

60 Years

As Penn State Behrend's 60th Anniversary wides to a close, we remember who helped get it there and made it what it is - the faculty and staff.

In 1948, the "Behrend Center" consisted of just 20 faculty and staff members. In the above photo, they gather in the Memorial Room of Glenhill Farmhouse.

To celebrate and commemorate Behrend's 60 years, more than 230 of Penn State Behrend’s 700+ faculty and staff members gathered on the baseball field in May 2009. The gathering exemplified the growth of Penn State Behrend 1948.
Happy Birthday, Behrend!
P.S. I'm in the upper right portion of the zero wearing blue.

Princess KT

This weekend was KT's Bridal Shower.

She was princess (or bridezilla...just kidding) for the day; her future mother-in-law even gave her a tiara to wear. Although, I'm not sure where the tiara is in all the pictures below.

The beautiful bride-to-be.

The SKANKs/Bridesmaids and the Maid of Honor Sissy.

The SKANKs (minus one 'K') bought KT wine-themed gifts, including a Wine Tasting Murder Mystery Game. (I think I might blog about the entire gift later.)

We even made black and white cupcakes to go with the B&W theme.
