Here's the answer to my internal debate...

What is more energy efficient: washing dishes by hand or in a machine?

Washing dishes by hand uses about twice the amount of water and energy as using a modern dishwasher.

According to the EPA, a dishwasher will typically save about 5,000 gallons of water, $40 in utility costs, and 230 hours of your time per year.

Of course, this is for a full load of dishes. If you put only a few dishes in your machine and run a full cycle, handwashing could win.

Also, this assumes water is wasted on unnecessary rinsing of dishes before placing them into the dishwasher. Scraping crud off with a spatula or lightly rinsing is all you need to do, provided you don't delay and let the stuff dry.

Marketing Monday: The Bark Side

Apparently, Volkswagen is feeling pressure as we head toward Super Bowl XLVI to improve upon its top rated ad from last year. Its The Force ad was ranked first by AdWeek.

Volkswagen has revealed in the cryptic ad above that its Super Bowl ad for this year will continue with the Star Wars theme, AND will add another layer of cuteness - dogs.

The teaser ad aired Wednesday on ABC, in which a canine chorus—including pooch versions of Chewbacca, an Ewok, and an AT-AT vehicle—bark out the Imperial March.

Effective advertising at its best.

This ad made me literally stop in my tracks (as I was about to do something productive during The Middle's commercial break), turn back, and watch the entire commercial wondering what was the product being marketed.

VW reported to AdWeek, "this video is not part of the actual 60-second spot that will be aired during the game. The Bark Side teaser was created to hint toward some of the exciting elements and characters that will be in the Super Bowl spot."

As a dog lover, I can't wait! I'm hopeful for another great commercial by ad agency: Deutsch based in Los Angeles.

I provided a link to the online story, but what I didn't say - and what wasn't included online - was my photograph of her was used in the article. (I didn't want to make that story about me, but HOLLA! It's pretty cool. And doesn't she look pretty?)

Erie's Beauty Captured

The Washington Post's Impulsive Traveler came to Erie this month to explore ice dunes and art. Read the entire article, written by Robin Soslow.

The author writes about exploring our beautiful Presque Isle State Park to spot ice dunes (which I'm not sure there are too many in existence currently) and warming up at the Erie Art Museum.

For those of us who are not fans of the cold weather, the art museum has two exhibits that let us encounter nature without needing to brave the frigid temperatures.

One of those exhibits, Carol Posch Comstock - Lake Effect Lace, is my mom's, where after four years of photographing snowflakes, the entire Ronald E. Holstein Gallery has been turned into a snow globe of her work.

How does she do it? Carol Posch Comstock will present a free Gallery Talk this Friday, January 20, at 7 p.m. in the Erie Art Museum's Multipurpose Room. Visitors will view her exhibit and learn about the photographic process using a digital camera and microscope to capture fleeting visions of the delicate natural wonders.

Of course, if you're from Erie, this may not be the first you are hearing about her show. She was featured in Lake Erie Lifestyles' December issue and her show was reviewed in the Erie Times-News Showcase today.

If you can't make the Gallery Talk, the show will remain up until February 25. (And, don't forget, the Erie Art Museum is free on Wednesdays.)

Confidence Builder?

This weekend I was feeling really positive about operating my household. I was confident.

For food: I went to Erie County Farms for healthy, affordable groceries and have/had four to five meals planned. I prepared to entertain friends Sunday night - with steak fajitas, guacamole, wine, and TV. I made beef stew in the crock pot without using a recipe. I chopped up lettuce and veggies for salads this week. I have veggies and shrimp to make a stir fry at some point. I have ground turkey for tacos. And I even froze some chopped veggies and meat for a future meals. I am sick of processed food (last week, I tried to eat things in my freezer to help clear the way).

For cleaning: I dusted and vacuumed every room, scrubbed the bathroom, and cleaned the kitchen (even cleaned out the refrigerator). Last weekend - I reorganized under the kitchen sink, scrubbed the microwave, reorganized the basement boxes, and straightened the garage. I even enhanced my family room's decor:

For laundry: I washed, folded, and put away two loads of laundry. I straightened the linen closet. I cleaned up my dressing room. And I ironed some sweaters that haven't been worn for at least one season (confidence is waning):

Any tips to remove?

For outside: I shoveled my back patio, my entire (double wide) driveway, and my front entrance. While I was outside shoveling, I was thinking, "I can do this. I can take care of myself and my house and my dog. Sure, I wouldn't be able to be a single mom, since you can't leave babies unattended in the house. But I can do this." Little did I know, you also can't leave Daisy unattended in the house (confidence gone):

Oh well. What can you do after a weekend of confidence? Curl up with the homemade beef stew and watch some good TV, while your dog hides from you.

Bird Stuff:
This is Lady Hawk, she is a red tailed hawk and an education bird for Tamarack Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Lady Hawk was admitted to the original rehab center back in 1992 when she was less than a year old. She had been found along the side of the road, suffering from a wing injury. Although no one knows exactly how Lady Hawk was injured, she was most likely hit by a car, damaging the tendons and ligaments in her wing. Despite their best efforts, volunteers were unable to heal Lady Hawk’s wing to the point where she could be released back into the wild. As is, she is unable to extend her wing fully. However, since 1996 she has been helping Tamarack volunteers with their education presentations throughout northwestern Pennsylvania.

Crazy Daisy

Do dogs get terrible twos? If so, my yellow labrador mix, Daisy, has them. She has been trying my patience for the last few weeks; especially this last week.

I get it. Dogs are dogs. You can't reason with them. You can't know what they are thinking. You can't stop their instincts. You can ask their opinions on your outfits, but don't expect an answer. Sigh. But I'm being driven nuts by a forty-pound ball of energy.

I've owned Daisy for about 14 months. And last month, I started leaving her loose in the house in the afternoons. Before that, I was crating her all day (aside from her (read: my) lunchtime break). She has been doing really well. A few accidents, but nothing major. And until last week, even the mischief she has gotten into hasn't been too bad.

Either I got confident/lazy or Daisy got bored/angry/destructive.

Last week, I came home at the end of the day to find:

A destroyed remote control
A chewed up emery board
A pair of scissors with no handles
A bottle of nail polish with the lid chewed
A pen in pieces with the red ink on my cream carpet
And more.

The carpet still looks like a murder may have taken place.
The cable company exchanged the remote with no questions asked.
A replacement pair of scissors has been purchased - that dog owes me $3.
The nail polish is still usable.

I know many dogs that are much more destructive and that rack up hundreds of dollars in damages. So, I am attempting to rationalize this.

Then this weekend... Daisy escaped.

She was barking at some animal that was beyond my fence. And then. Swoosh. Houdini Daisy weaseled her way under my chain link fence!

Hindsight: This was an interesting experiment to see how I handle myself in a stressful situation.

Picture this. It's 9 p.m. on a Saturday night (luckily, I was staying in; unluckily, I was in my PJs). I left Daisy outside to do her business, as I remained in the kitchen searching for something sweet and I heard barking. I slip on my clog-like sneakers (those ugly ones that have no backs on them) and go outside to yell at her.

I can tell she is barking at an animal from the type of bark, but it's dark out and I cannot see anything. Then I heard rustling in the brush. So does Daisy. More barking. And running back and forth along the back fence. Then, woosh. There she goes. Daisy squeezes under the fence and takes off into the darkness. I yell and yell some more. Then I decide to run into the house and grab a flashlight from my bedroom and a leash. I debate on grabbing my phone, but I don't.

Then I take off, running into the woods. Woods I've never explored. I keep my eyes and ears pealed, while screaming her name (with a few expletives under my breath). I'm sure I'm probably freaking out the side street neighbors - crazy, hollering lady, with a flashlight, in her PJs, running behind their houses.

I can still hear Daisy (or the animal) rustling. I go towards the crunching - attempting to avoid grape vines, bushes, trees, puddles. Good thing I grabbed this little flashlight, otherwise, I would have broke my ankle (at a minimum). I can tell I'm getting closer to the sounds, then I see a flash of the yellow lab, running towards the side street houses, but I can't get to her through all the overgrowth. I have to head back the way I came. When I finally emerge from the woods, I'm back near my house and run the direction I saw Daisy last. I hear nothing. Well, that's not exactly true. I hear barking, but come to realize it's the dogs inside the houses, most likely barking at the crazy lady running down their street, whose trying not run out of her clog sneakers.

Then I really panic. I've lost her. And if she was chasing a deer, she's gone forever.

I start running through what to do when you lose your dog in my head (who to call, recent pictures, post to Internet) as I head back to my house for my phone and my car keys.

I call my parents, ask for help, and tell them I don't know what to do, should I start driving around? At this point, I'm walking along the busiest (township maintained) road in Harborcreek, my road. I'm hoping that if she darts out, I might see her and be able to stop a car before the unspeakable happens. Never did it cross my mind that I might get hit on this darkened street at 9 p.m.

My parents start putting on their shoes and tell me to head home and continue to call for her. "Okay. Please hurry..."

"...Wait, I hear barking. Daisy?! DAISY! I see her!! Come hear! DAISY!"

Of course, I can't get the leash on the mud- and bur-covered dog, because I have a flashlight, a phone, and keys in my shaking hands. Plus it's dark and I can't see what I'm doing.

Luckily, I get her inside my (defective) fenced yard and tell my parents I will call them later, because this runaway dog is in desperate need of a bath and her owner needs a glass of wine.

In the bath, as I pick off the individual burs (I think, this is what monkeys must feel like), I notice scratches along her nose, eyes, and ears. I wonder if it's from the fence, the animal, or the dried plant life. Poor girl, the soap and water are probably stinging.

Also, did you know, mud comes off fairly easily, burs are tedious to pick off, and red ink will not wash off fur?

I hope Daisy had a fun adventure, because my dad is on call to reinforce the Achilles heal of that fence so my escape artist can't break free again.

I guess I handled myself pretty well. It wasn't until I was on the phone with my parents that I felt I might cry. Before that point, there wasn't time; there was too much to concentrate on. I was in a focused panic.

Meanwhile, Daisy didn't even know there was a problem.

Ha! Dogs. Gotta love 'em. Because what's the alternative?

Fix You

I know most of you have heard of the male a cappella group Straight No Chaser. Their PBS special re-airred Monday night. I'm not gonna lie; I used the 90-special as an opportunity to dance around my living room (minus the last 30 minutes of Christmas music, I didn't need to rewatch that part).

On Dec. 11, 2011, in Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, Annette Swoffer walked in to her kitchen and quickly met Lucky, the seal pup.

"I was in my office and I heard an awful racket down below... I thought the cats have brought a rabbit or something in so I went down and had a look - and there's a seal in my kitchen," said Swoffer. "I thought 'I'm hallucinating, this is just wrong.'"

Lucky, named for his knack for crossing busy streets without a scratch, wound up asleep on Swoffer's couch after apparently entering her home through a cat door, according to The New Zealand Herald.

Swoffer called the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals who contacted the Department of Conservation, which was already looking for the pup.

Apparently, this isn't the first time the department's rangers have received calls about Lucky. They reportedly have dropped the seal back into the sea twice before and they can't say for certain that they won't be at it again in the future.

Wild Wednesday: Green Your Grocery Trip

The eco-impact of trips to the grocery store can really add up. The Sierra Club offers tips on how to look at ways to go easy on the planet when it's time to stock the fridge and pantry.

Tip #1: Walk or bike.
It may not be realistic for those living in rural areas, but for urbanites and suburbanites, walking, biking, or taking public transit to the market can be a good option. You'll be reducing both traffic congestion and its emissions. Make sure can bring your groceries home, though, whether by carrying them or bundling them on your bike. In other words, don’t buy too much stuff.
Tip #2: Avoid packaged foods.
Most markets are filled with processed and packaged foods. Think of the freezer section or the aisles lined with chips and crackers and cookies: It’s one packaged item after another. Of course, it’s unreasonable to expect people to cut out packaged foods altogether, but you'd be wise to spend more time in the produce section. Why? Well, everyone knows about recycling. But if you take it a step further and think about precycling, you'll think through your purchase so that it generates as little waste as possible — and you'll avoid the need to recycle in the first place.
Tip #3: Buy local, seasonal food.
During fall and winter, ask yourself whether you really need those strawberries that were flown all the way in from South America. A great way to reduce your carbon footprint is to think seasonally, by finding out what foods are being grown where you live. One option for finding fresh, local produce is to frequent your nearest farmers' market.

Tip #4: Bring a reusable bag.
When it’s time to check out, a reusable shopping bag is an easy way to cut back on all that paper and plastic. You can choose bags made from canvas, polyester, hemp, or organic cotton. If you’ve typically got a heavy load to cart, invest in a folding wheeled cart for an easier trip home.

Bring 'Em Home!

Today U.S. officials formally shut down the war in Iraq.

After nearly nine years of the United States occupation in Iraq:
100,000 Iraqis lives were lost
4,500 American were killed
32,000 Americans were wounded
$800+ billion was spent by the U.S.

Hopefully our country's efforts have not been in vain. U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the conflict was worth the price in blood and money, as it set Iraq on a path to democracy. At today's ceremony, Panetta told the troops, "You will leave with great pride — lasting pride. Secure in knowing that your sacrifice has helped the Iraqi people to begin a new chapter in history."

According to ABC news, Iraqi citizens offered a more pessimistic assessment. "The Americans are leaving behind them a destroyed country," said Mariam Khazim of Sadr City. "The Americans did not leave modern schools or big factories behind them. Instead, they left thousands of widows and orphans."

The United States has not left entirely. There are still government officials and civilians who will stay. And at least 4,000 forces will remain in Kuwait for some months to help finalize the move out of Iraq.

Panetta acknowledged the difficulties for Iraq in the coming years, as the country tries to find its footing. "They're going face challenges in the future. They'll face challenges from terrorism, they'll face challenges from those that would want to divide their country. They'll face challenges from just the test of democracy, a new democracy and trying to make it work. But the fact is, we have given them the opportunity to be able to succeed."

I rejoice we are able to end this war.
I am thrilled our service men and women are able to come home.
I am disappointed we began his conflict with faulty intelligence.
I have hope the Iraqi citizens will persevere.
I am saddened the U.S. couldn't accomplish all the goals.
I weep for the lives lost.

Necessary and Unnecessary Accessories

Yesterday I took the day off from work. My mom and I spent the day shopping, lunching, and movie going. I experienced what it feels like to be a lady of leisure. It was lovely.

But to the point, I did a little Christmas shopping, but as it always turns out, I did more shopping for myself. Oops.

I did, however, get gifts for my aunt, uncle, and sister. So I think I am done. I would like to get one more gift for both my mom and dad, but we will see. There's not much time left.

Anyway, back to me.

Yesterday, I purchased one necessary accessory and two not-so-necessary accessories.

I have been searching and searching for grey booties. I finally found some. I don't LOVE them, but they were affordable and comfortable.

I like the grey (synthetic - no animals were harmed in the creation of this boot) leather. I like the slouch. I like the buckle detail. I'm not crazy about the brown, stacked wedge. But I will get over it, the most comfy shoes I own are wedges. They really are nice. And I know I will wear them all the time. In fact, I think I should buy some leather protector or some sealant to keep these booties dry.

Now, on to the unnecessary. So unnecessary I might have to return...

I picked up these ridiculous, sparkle slingbacks on clearance. I'm a sucker for a shoe that is listed for $15! Come on! I spent more on lunch yesterday than I did on these shoes. But I know these are completely impractical. For one, the heel is 4.5 inches. Sure there is a half-inch platform, but the heel still is 4 inches and I can't walk in that. But on the flipside. These would be perfect New Year's Eve shoes... even though I have no plans to ring in 2012.

The other thing I picked up that, again, I have no NEED for (but do we ever buy accessories for need?) is this headpiece. In the old days, these used to be called fasinators. I suppose they still are called that - but it's not common in our venacular. It has a polka dot, birdcage veil and a green feather detail. This, too, could be a fun New Year's Eve accessory, a good Kentucy Derby hat, or an appropriate English wedding hat.

Sigh...

I found myself wondering, "whatever happened to him?" the other day.

(And P.S. remember when such questions couldn't be answered at the click of a mouse? You know, BI - before internet. Or maybe BG -before google. Either way, back in the day, when you had a random question, there was no way of answering it. You might ask the closest person to you, they would furrow their brow and shrug. And that would be that. No answer. Curiousity killed the cat back then, now the cat just looks it up on Wikipedia. But also, back then, fame was fleeting.) It's flashback time.

I had some serious crushes on many 90s teen heartthrobs (don't judge, but I'm pretty sure I had a collection of (playing) cards with boys faces on them). So now it's time to not only reveal my love interests, but also find out what happened to each of them.

The Dog Dazed of

My one and a half year old, yellow Labrador mix dog, Daisy, broke her tooth last year and then broke another one a couple weeks ago.

How?

Well, last year while she was still crate training, I think she broke it chewing on the metal crate door. It's the only explanation I have. It was one of the large canine teeth. The vet said to leave it until it started to bother her or got infected.

A couple weeks ago, I threw a toy and she went to catch it. Bam! Face first into the wall. Poor puppy. She was visibly shaken. And when I looked at her to see if she was okay, I noticed her front little incisor was cracked. I called the vet and they said they would like to see her, but the surgery wasn't an emergency. Throughout the day, the cracked tooth turned into a chipped tooth and then a broken tooth that was broken all the way to the gum line.

Yesterday was Daisy's surgery and she had both teeth removed. I was a nervous wreck. I don't know how parents handle a child's injury and/or surgery. I realize she is just a pet. But to us pet owners, we know there is no such thing as "just a pet." I was nervous for days leading up to the surgery, the morning when we woke up, when I dropped her off, and throughout the day.

One of my silly concerns was how she would act the morning of the surgery since she wasn't allowed to eat. It's not like you can explain things to dogs. I thought she would be a nut. But she wasn't. She was absolutely calm and laid under my legs as I primped in the morning, just like normal, chewing on her bone. Chewing that now isn't allowed to happen for two weeks. Poor pup.

After I dropped her off, I almost cried driving to work. I tried to rationalize. Seriously, I'm glad I'm not a parent. Kids get hurt much more often. It was difficult to focus and my fear got the best of me at times. "What if they're not calling to update me because something serious happened? They probably don't give bad news over the phone. I'll be devastated died on the operating table." Yea. Rationality. Gone.

They called. Everything went well. She was awake. And the teeth came out easily.

I picked her up after work and she was very loopy. Her eyes were not focusing; she was definitely drugged. Her bottom eyelids were droopy. She was constantly blinking and struggling to keep her eyes open.

As the night wore on and her pain killers let up, she would whimper quietly. She also was continuously licking her bandaged leg where the IV fluids were injected. It was a long night of: "Good girl, Daisy. It's okay." and "No. Leave it. Stop."

We cuddled a lot. And went to bed early.

Dazed Daisy. At bedtime.

This morning was tricky. The vet gave me painkillers to give her at breakfast for seven days. No problem. This pup will eat anything covered in cheese or peanut butter. But her food needs to be softened (or she needs to eat canned food. Sorry, I just paid for this surgery, expensive food is not a financial option). Softening the food wasn't easy because she is used to the morning routine. When I scooped her food and, instead of giving it to her, left it on the counter with water, she was not happy. She ran around like a crazy dog. She whined at me. And then sat and stared (and whined some more). Those puppy eyes are very powerful convincers.

But overall she is doing well. Recovering. And hopefully not too mad at me. "Bitch, you stole my teeth, I better at least get $1 for each!" Nah - Daisy doesn't curse.

Erie's own Maria Sansone asks Chris March (famed by Project Runway) to transform her into a 1950s housewife for Animal Fair Magazine’s annual Paws for Style fashion show during his new TV show Mad Fashion. Sansone not only needs March to create a runway look for her, but also a complementing look for her cockapoo, Ralphie.

Some of you may remember Maria Sansone at age 11 when Mike Gallagher of WJET-TV in Erie, Pennsylvania, hired her to host her own children's sports show, Down to Size. Sansone now works for TV Guide Network. You can learn more about her on her website.

Mad Fashion is in its first season on Bravo and airs Tuesday at 10 p.m. eastern. From start to finish, viewers see March and his eccentric crew create one-of-a-kind designs for his high-profile clientele.

10 Words and Terms That Ruin a Resume

Your resume needs an update -- that is, if your resume is like that of most people, it’s not as good as it could be. The problem is language: Most resumes are a thicket of deadwood words and phrases -- empty cliches, annoying jargon and recycled buzzwords. Recruiters, HR folks, and hiring managers see these terms over and over again, and it makes them sad. Wouldn’t you rather make them happy? It’s time to start raking out your resume, starting with these (and similar) terms.

1. “Salary negotiable”

Yes, they know. If you’re wasting a precious line of your resume on this term, it looks as though you’re padding -- that you’ve run out of things to talk about. If your salary is not negotiable, that would be somewhat unusual. (Still, don’t put that on your resume either.)

2. “References available by request”

See the preceding comment about unnecessary terms.

3. “Responsible for ______”

Reading this term, the recruiter can almost picture the C-average, uninspired employee mechanically fulfilling his job requirements -- no more, no less. Having been responsible for something isn’t something you did -- it’s something that happened to you. Turn phrases like “responsible for” into “managed,” “led” or other decisive, strong verbs.

4. “Experience working in ______”

Again, experience is something that happens to you -- not something you achieve. Describe your background in terms of achievements.

5. “Problem-solving skills”
You know who else has problem-solving skills? Monkeys. Dogs. On your resume, stick to skills that require a human.

6. “Detail-oriented”

So, you pay attention to details. Well, so does everyone else. Don’t you have something unique to tell the hiring manager? Plus, putting this on your resume will make that accidental typo in your cover letter or resume all the more comical.

7. “Hardworking”

Have you ever heard the term “show -- don’t tell”? This is where that might apply. Anyone can call himself a hard worker. It’s a lot more convincing if you describe situations in concrete detail in which your hard work benefited an employer.

8. “Team player”

See the preceding comment about showing instead of telling. There are very few jobs that don’t involve working with someone else. If you have relevant success stories about collaboration, put them on your resume. Talk about the kinds of teams you worked on, and how you succeeded.

9. “Proactive”

This is a completely deflated buzzword. Again, show rather than tell.

10. “Objective”

This term isn’t always verboten, but you should use it carefully. If your objective is to get the job you’ve applied for, there’s no need to spell that out on your resume with its own heading. A resume objective is usually better replaced by a career summary describing your background, achievements and what you have to offer an employer. An exception might be if you haven’t applied for a specific job and don’t have a lot of experience that speaks to the position you’d like to achieve.

As I mentioned in my last Foto Friday of the Grand Canyon, the vista is constantly changing because of sunlight, clouds, shadows, fog, etc. But I wanted to provide you with an example of that.

Question: What Do Turtles Do In The Winter?
Answer: It's called "brumation," and we should leave them be while they do it.

As the leaves turn colors and fall off the trees and the temperatures start to get colder, most of the migrant birds have left for their wintering grounds and many mammals have fattened up and found dens or other shelters.

But, what do cold-blooded animals like turtles do to prepare for the difficult winter ahead? Cold-blooded animals rely on their surrounding environment to keep warm. When cold weather hits, turtles go into a hibernation type state called “brumation” to help them survive the winter.
“Brumation is triggered by cold weather and shorter periods of daylight,” said Jenny Dickson, a wildlife biologist with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Wildlife Division.

Turtles in the northeast United States generally begin brumation in late fall. During brumation, turtles become less active, their metabolism slows, and their body temperature drops. However, turtles will often “wake up” to drink water.

Turtles do not breathe during brumation, instead relying on oxygen stored in blood vessels in the throat cavity and anal sacs. To cope with the cold, turtles that live in aquatic environments move to the bottom of the pond or creek. It is advantageous if they can go deeper than the frostline, where winter temperatures tend to stabilize above freezing. Some turtles, like painted turtles, are tolerant of freezing to a certain degree. These turtles’ cryogenic properties, or cryoprotectants, are even being studied to determine if they would be helpful in preserving human organs for future transplants.
When spring arrives with its warmer temperatures, most turtles emerge from brumation, becoming active and seeking spots to bask in the sun.

Hatchlings
“Young aquatic and land turtles that hatch from eggs that were buried in the ground over spring can either dig out of the hole, or ‘nest,’ in the fall and brumate as the adults do, or they can remain in the nest, possibly digging further into the soil,” added Dickson. “This demonstrates why female turtles must choose an optimum site to place their nests – the female must be able to detect features of the area that make it suitable for the eggs. Therefore, whenever homeowners witness a turtle nesting in their yard or garden, they are encouraged to allow the turtle to dig its nest where it chooses and leave the turtle and eggs alone.”

Whether turtle hatchlings emerge from the nest in the fall or in the spring, the DEEP Wildlife Division reminds residents not to collect hatchlings for pets. Leaving turtles alone and observing them from a distance is best for the turtle and also for your own health, as turtles can transmit Salmonella to humans.

Panda Poop

A Chinese wildlife expert believes tea infused with panda poop may prevent cancer. An Yanshi, of Sichuan University, believes that tea lovers with be so enthusiastic about the new product they will be willing to pay up to $36,000 per pound.

The key is the panda's digestive system, which only absorbs about 30% of the bamboo the animals eat. An Yanshi says because bamboo contains an element that may prevents cancer, using bamboo-filled poop as fertilizer will confer that property on the tea.

According to Kevin Dooley, of Treehugger.com, it helps that he's making green tea, which has antioxidants that seem to prevent cancer cells from dividing. So by Yanshi's logic, the super tea will double down your protection against the deadly disease.

An Yanshi says that the tea will have "a mature, nutty taste and a very distinctive aroma."

Unfortunately, photos cannot capture the grandeur of the Grand Canyon. And at some point on my trip I stopped trying to capture its enormous size with the camera, because even my eyes could not grasp the vastness. Don't get my wrong, I still snapped hundreds and hundreds of photos. But seeing the photos on the little display screen, and even now seeing them on the 17 inch monitor, doesn't compare.

This photo was take April 5, 2011, at 5:20 p.m. (45 minutes before sunset). It was only the eleventh picture I took of the Grand Canyon.

My favorite experience was witnessing how the Canyon transformed as the sun moved, as the clouds rearranged, and as the weather changed. While we relocated throughout our two days there, the Canyon also morphed with the breezes, precipitation, and atmospheric fluctuations. Twas incredible!

Tonight is the finale of Project Runway Season 9. This season has mostly been a disappointment. Although it was high in drama, it was low in cool designs and remarkable looks. But I haven't missed an episode. And tonight will be no exception (I'm drinking my caffeine as I write this).

Tonight wrapped up in my blanket, with only my sharp tongue, remote, and iPhone, I will be rooting on Viktor Luna for the win.

Wild Wednesday: Green your Pet

Pets are such a source of joy, but America's more than 160 million owned dogs and cats do impact the environment. Sierra Club offers tips about how to reduce their environmental pawprint.

Tip #1: Head to the pound.
When you're looking for a furry pal, skip the pet stores and breeders and visit the pounds and shelters instead. The commercial pet trade creates an excess of animals when millions are already in need of adoption. Plus, the business of selling animals harms rainforests, from which 38 million creatures are removed every year for the retail-pet industry. Shelters stock an excellent selection of breeds (and charming mutts) that need "recycling" into a new home. Some shelters have even gone green!

Tip #2: Choose the greenest pet products.
The U.S. pet-product industry rakes in more than $40 billion per year, only $1 billion of which goes to eco-friendly items. Do your part to pump up that number by opting for organic pet food, as well as gear and toys made by eco-minded manufacturers like Scutte, Molly Mutt, and World’s Best Cat Litter; a Google search reveals many more. But buying greener doesn’t mean you have to buy more. The best way to reduce waste is to ask yourself whether your pet really needs the item you’re considering buying.

Tip #3: Spay and neuter.
Animal overpopulation is an issue not only because up to 4 million U.S. shelter animals are euthanized each year, but also because of the environmental impact of too many stray and abandoned animals: They can harm local wildlife and spread waste and trash. You can help curb the problem by having your pet spayed or neutered.

Tip #4: Deal with their waste.
One of the biggest hassles of having a pet is dealing with their poop. Not only is it inherently unpleasant, but it also poses environmental hazards such as water pollution, transmitting diseases to other species, and, if left unchecked in public spaces, causing human resentment toward animals. Do your duty by picking up any business your pet leaves behind using a biodegradable bag or a Skooperbox. Other green ways to dispose of the stuff include flushing it, composting it (Note: you shouldn't compost waste in the bin you will use on your garden), and burying it. There are also plenty of eco-friendly cat litters out there.

Five in Five

Five things I'm loving right now while the leaves change and the temperatures drop...

1) Electric Blanket. I finally put on my bed's electric blanket last weekend. Ooo. It's so nice! Actually, it's a pretty cheap quality and it's for a twin bed. But I don't care, I love it dispite its flaws. The blanket makes it harder and harder to climb out of bed in the morning to be greeted by chilly air; cold, wood floors; and dark, rainy skies. Ick. What terrible weather we have been having.

2) New Boots. If I don't feed my shopping addiction, I can resist. But as soon as I buy something new, I crave more and more. I'm doing okay since my recent purchase. I bought these Chinese Laundry Bosco booties. They hit the fashion mark this season: Lace-up. Stacked heals. Androgyny. Shearling detail. Love 'em! I haven't worn them up - the weather has been delaying me.

3) Apples. Apple Cider. Caramel Apple Dip. Tis the season! I love the crisp, fresh apples our local farmers grow. And what better way to enjoy a healthy snack then covered in caramel dip? I love ice cold and piping hot apple cider - there's not wrong temperature for the delicious beverage. But with this chilly, icky weather, the best way to warm your soul is with a mug of some warm cider.

4) Pumpkin Desserts. You can always tell when fall approaches; Facebook is buzzing about Pumpkin Spice Lattes. Well, I finally tried one this year - since we have Starbucks coffee at work/on campus now. It didn't live up to the hype. However, you can also always tell when it's autumn because all the bakeries have pumpkin muffins, pumpkin roll, pumpkin sugar cookies, pumpkin bread, etc. So good. P.S. Did I tell you I grew two pumpkins in my "garden" this year? The one was tiny and the other was a good size. Well, I picked the large one too late, I think. Because after I picked it, it started rotting on my porch - gross - and it juiced down the steps. Ha! So I dug a hole in my garden and buried it - maybe I'll get some more pumpkins next year.

5) Reading. During this beautiful summer, I kinda forgot to pick up a book. I don't know why. Last year, I would sit outside in my anti-gravity chair in the sunshine and read. Well - I am back at it. I just finished reading The Girl Who Played with Fire (the second book in the Millenium series) for the girls' book club. In the cold weather, I curl up under two blankets, next to the back windows, in my IKEA chair with Daisy on my lap. She's a great book rest and personal heater.

If you can't tell... one thing I'm not loving...

The Weather. Blah! It's been so crappy. It's one thing to be chilly in autumn. I get that. This is Erie. We are supposed to love the changing of the seasons and appreciate each one for its differences. But this rain. Wah! It makes it feel so much colder. It makes the leaves look less colorful. It confuses me on which coat to wear - the rain coat with the hood or the winter one without the hood? It doesn't allow Daisy to play outside (she doesn't like getting wet). It makes my sump pump run like crazy (which in turn wakes my up in my sleep, which in turn makes me crabby in the morning). It makes the leaves stick to the lawn - causing them NOT to blow away.

I'm over this rain - for realz.

This Great Horned Owl is part of the traveling education birds of Tamarack Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center in Saegertown, Pa. His (I'm not sure he is male, but I think he is) name is Ick-a-Bobette.

Tamarack specializes in the rescue, treatment, and release of injured, orphaned, and sick wildlife. Additionally, Tamarack provides public education programs and materials on the behavior, feeding habits, and natural habitats of many of Pennsylvania’s species of wildlife.

This photo was taken on August 20 at Campbell's Pottery Barn during it's "For the Birds" art exhibit, proceeds of the sale of all the exhibited pieces in the Stonewall Gallery and any bird-inspired art throughout Campbell's benefited Tamarack.

Happy Cows Come from Erie!

Showman Farms is a small, family owned and operated dairy farm located along Little Conneautee Creek in Edinboro, Pennsylvania.

It has been milking happy, healthy cows for six generations since 1892. Every cow, bull, or calf has a name, and they know it.

Change Your Perspective

I happened upon a nice article on Tiny Buddha by Kevin Tyler Smith. He talked about feeling unhappy, discontent, and dispare. And I think many of us have felt this way about pieces of our life at one time. He says, "you can choose to change that feeling if you lift your veil of dismay and aim to create clarity about your life and what matters.

"Maybe you feel like the fire is gone and there’s just nothing exciting in your life. Maybe you’re just plain disheartened with who you have become and the life you are living. No matter how discontent you might feel, know it’s only temporary."

Smith suggests focusing on these 12 gifts and the world will seem like a much brighter place:

1. Your buddy network.
Friends are there to comfort and guide you every step of the way. They also deal with trials every now and then, like you. It is adventurously therapeutic for you to walk together, communicate authentically, and support each other through times of difficulty.

2. Your beautiful world.
Stop and take time to appreciate the trees, the birds, and the wind blowing in your face. Look around you. It’s a magnificent world that’s available to you 24 hours a day—for free. The simplest things that can make you happy are around you, right now.

3. Your ability to work.
Even if you’re currently out of work, there are opportunities, and you will seize one eventually. It’s always empowering to realize you have options to earn and take care of yourself.

4. Your opportunity to travel.
It’s a big world out there and you have the chance to explore new sights and different experiences. The cultures of other countries will leave you mesmerized with how congruent or vastly different we all are, even though we live under the same blue sky. And if you can’t travel far, you can still venture to unfamiliar places and experience something new.

5. Your opportunity for altruism.
Release worries about your own plight and focus on others in need. Join causes and relief programs, talk to a suffering friend, or assist people in hospitals. When you take the focus off of your life through meaningful advocacy and volunteering, you will make a difference and appreciate how fulfilled you really are.

6. Your family.
You most likely have a partner, a child, or a relative who heavily depends on you. These people enjoy life in part because you are alive. This is an important role, treat it with care.

7. Your role in the environment.
Your time here on earth will determine how the future generations will live theirs. Quite empowering, huh? People today have a responsibility to keep the environment safe for others to enjoy down the road. Life is meant to be shared, including the generations that follow.

8. Your uniqueness.
Grab a pen and paper and write down all your skills and talents, no matter how small. You may be surprised at how many you have that you do not utilize. Start sharing these gifts to bring joy to others around you, and give them the chance to appreciate your uniqueness.

9. Your blessings.
Pessimists have the habit of complaining about things they don’t have. Do the exact opposite and love your life for the things that you do have, no matter how little. Be thankful for your home, your food, and the people you care about in your life.

10. Your goals.

We have options to combat a negative outlook on life. Of course, we still have to deal with the natural ebb and flow of happiness and sadness in life, but that gets easier with practice. Choose to see what’s right about the world. Then go out there and really live.

Erie-ites, what's the oldest building in the City of Erie?

Dickson Tavern is located at the corner of 2nd and French Streets in downtown Erie. The three-story, Federal and Greek Revival-style building was constructed in 1815 by William Himrod and owned by John Dickson. It was owned by Erie from 1924-2004 and it was used for a time as the Perry Memorial House museum.

Dickson, a shipbuilder and a prisoner-of-war, bought a plot of land on the corner of 2nd and French Streets after the War of 1812 where, in 1815, William Himrod built a tavern. The tavern itself was named by Dickson the "Exchange Coffee House" to appeal to the higher class. Dickson was known for hosting outdoor banquets during the summer months. One such banquet, on June 9, 1825, was attended by the Marquis de Lafayette, who visited Erie on his return to the United States. Dickson moved to Meadville, Pennsylvania in 1829 and opened another establishment. He moved to Pittsburgh two years later and sold the tavern in Erie for $1,800 ($37 thousand in 2011 dollars).

The tavern continued to be used as an eating establishment by various owners, until it was sold 1841. In 1841, an addition was made to the building and it was used as a residence until 1924. It was then acquired by the city and faced demolition. The building's interior was modified from 1928 to 1963 for use as a museum and became known as the Perry Memorial House. The museum was closed in 2004 and Dickson has since remained vacant. In November 2009, a local architectural firm, Kidder Wachtner, bought the tavern and is currently renovating the building for use as its office.

It was often alleged that the tunnels under the Dickson Tavern were part of the Underground Railroad, since the tavern is located about two blocks from the port. It is said former slaves were hidden in the fruit cellar below the bar. The house is of secret passages, false walls, and a tunnel leading to the water, where fugitives departed for Canada.

Another reason for the claim, William Himrod, a local partner in iron companies, who built the tavern, was a white abolitionist, active in the Underground Railroad, and a founding member of Erie's Antislavery Society. In 1824, Himrod established the French Street School for Colored Children in Erie, which became known as The Himrod Mission. It was a station on the Underground Railroad. Himrod purchase a large tract of land in 1927 that was separated from the City of Erie by a deep ravine. He sold the lots at an affordable price to African Americans and destitute white. The area, known as Jerusalem, was a haven for fugitive slaves.

However recent reports dispute the claim Dickson Tavern was part of the Underground Railroad for two main reasons. Erie was closely watched by slave catchers because of its proximity to Canada, so it was very difficult to move fugitives around the local docks. Some historians say the tunnel that was reportedly used by fugitives to get down to the bay was probably a cistern that held rainwater runoff.

Tip #1: Make your own wiper fluid.
Next time you run out of windshield-wiper fluid, think twice before running to the store. Traditional wiper fluid, due to the main ingredient, methyl alcohol, is extremely toxic when ingested -- a danger for kids and pets. Instead, use vinegar and water to clean your windshield in the summer months or in warmer climes (the mixture can freeze if it's too cold). Another option is a mixture of water, isopropyl alcohol, and dishwashing soap. If you're in an experimenting mood, try mixing a green cleaner you already have at home with water to see how well it works.

Tip #2: Natural stain removers.
No one likes the smell (or health or environmental effects) of bleach. Use lemon juice to whiten fabrics instead, and a mixture of lemon juice and salt to remove individual stains. Adding half a cup of baking soda to your wash could also get rid of tough stains without the scrubbing. Spilled red wine? Try putting some white wine over it. Glycerin, dishwashing soap, and water can also work wonders. If it's oil you're trying to get out, use baby powder to soak it up: It's a beauty secret for hair that works on clothes and upholstery too.

Tip #3: Use DIY metal and furniture cleaners.
Ever thought about using ketchup to shine your metal? It might just work for polishing your brass, according to The Ecology Center. A mixture of baking soda, water, salt, and aluminum foil makes a cleansing bath for silver. The center has many more recipes for ingenious, eco-friendly solutions to make everything from your silverware to your wood furniture shine.

Tip #4: Deodorize and shine your shoes.
To make the surface of your shoes gleam, use a combination of olive oil and lemon juice. If your sneakers emit an offensive smell, Livestrong suggests using arrow root starch, potato starch, or corn starch and baking soda. Other sites suggest spraying your shoes with strong black tea so that tannin — a compound known for its leather-making and odor-busting properties — can suck up the odors. Just make sure you have dark shoes or don't mind staining the insides of them.

On our second day in Sedona, Arizona, we were only there in the morning before we needed to drive to the Grand Canyon. We woke up and decided to go for a quick walk to try to find the easiest vortex to get to. We didn't know where we were going or what we were looking for; we never found the vortex. But the views on Airport Mesa trail at Overlook Point and Courthouse Butte Vista more than made up for the fact we didn't feel a vortex.

Five things I love that start with the letter C.

1) Cheesecake. I don't really like cake or cupcakes, but damn I love cheesecake. I know. I know. How can I not like cake? It's too sweet and the sponginess doesn't thrill me. I guess it's not that I don't like it (well - maybe it is), but I just would much rather spend those calories on cheesecake, cookies, ice cream, chocolate (oh shoot, I'm going to have more than five items on this list, I fear). I love the creaminess of cheesecake; the texture is so smooth. I love how cheesecake isn't extremely sweet, even the really decadent flavors are never as teeth-hurting as cake's buttercream frosting.

2) Cheese. I'm a big fan of the artery-clogging dairy product. I always have some in my frig. It's my go-to snack, it's my go-to appetizer, it's my go-to meal topper, it's my go-to meal (depending on how empty my frig is). Currently, as autumn is upon us, let me recommend some fresh, extra-sharp, Vermont cheddar with a cold glass of apple cider. Delish! Your mouth will experience the leaves changing... or something like that.

3) Chocolate. Hopefully this entire list won't all be about food. But how could I post about the letter C without including chocolate? There's not much to say except: my life would be a very sad place if there was no chocolate. I've always wanted to host/plan a chocolate tasting event using the local Erie chocolatiers (mainly because I've always wanted to attend such an event). Erie Times-New's Chew On It blog did a tasting and review of the local delights: here and here. I think my favorite Erie chocolatier is Pulakos, but I have never really compared it to a blind taste test. I definitely think an alumni event will be happening in the future.

4) Coats. As the temperatures change, it is almost time to get out the winter coats. I have a lot. I never have an issue purchasing another new coat for the season. We in Erie get our wear out of them. We probably wear winter coats for about half the year, trench/rain coats for about a quarter of the year, and only three months a year are spent sans coat. I have more than a dozen winter coats and a handful of spring/fall trench coats. I wear them based on what matches best with my outfit. Spice them up for different gloves and scarves. And even though, not many people see my outer outfit daily. I see it. And I enjoy not only staying warm, but also staying on trend.

5) Creativity. I miss high school crafts class. I miss having an hour a day to sit and draw, paint, cut, fold, and try new things. We all need more creativity in our lives, it stimulates the brain. It helps focus the mind. It relieves stress. Whether you take photos, dance, sing, paint, write, make jewelry, act, garden, cook, blog, or something else, you express yourself. And that creativity supports happiness. It feeds the soul. How do you foster your creative juices? How will you continue to develop your imagination? Next time you are near a craft store go inside. Become inspired by the paints, beads, frames, paper, flowers, glass, wood. Taking something (a blank canvas, an empty frame, or word document) from white to covered in beauty or text is satisfying. And not just satisfying, but it norishes bliss. We often forget to continue creativity into adulthood

Making the world a better place isn't limited to protecting Earth's physical resources: We've got to improve the person-to-person environment too. Here are some tips from Sierra Club on how to treat your fellow humans a little bit better with actions that just so happen to help the planet too.

Tip #1: Hold the elevator door.
Isn't it the worst when you're walking toward an elevator full of people only to see its door shut just when you're close enough to get on? Decide to be the person who gallantly holds the door open for someone -- it'll improve morale and save electricity and hydraulic fluid: Why should the elevator have to use the energy to make two trips when it can make just one?

Tip #2: Give excess away.
Do you feel a tinge of guilt when the waiter whisks away half of that oversized portion you couldn’t stuff into your belly? Instead of sending that food to a landfill where it’ll emit methane as it decomposes, take the leftovers in a to-go box (no plastic bag, please) and politely offer it to the first homeless person you see. Chances are he or she is hungry and will be happy to get a free lunch or dinner. The same goes for excess clothes: If you haven’t worn something in a year, it belongs to someone who wants it more.

Tip #3: Let it grow.
Imagine a world without plants. Or even with half the amount of plants that exist now. Pretty grim, isn’t it? With that stark possibility that in mind, make efforts to beautify the spaces around you with bursts of life. Do you know of a bare piece of soil? Make it blossom! You, too, can be a guerrilla gardener or a seed bomber. Short on time? Greening your surroundings can be as simple as buying a pretty plant and leaving it anonymously on someone’s doorstep.

Tip #4: Be creative.
The most genuine act of kindness is one that arises spontaneously out of your own inspiration. Approach each day with a “How can I help?” attitude and you’re sure to see dozens of things you can do for others and the environment. Need motivation? Try something new for 30 days. Small changes = sustainable.

I saw this over on atouchofcass, who stumbled upon it at Matt Cutts: Try something new for 30 days— on TED.

One of the goal ideas, write a novel in 30 days. All you have to do is write around 1,600 words a day. I started to write a book last August and only made it 425 words. So, I probably shouldn't make that my first 30-day challenge.

Maybe I will start with taking one picture everyday. It would certainly help me remember my month better. But it also might reveal how boring I am, especially when every picture ends up being of my dog.

Ghosts Afloat will transform Erie’s treasure into a haunted ship when ghosts from the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie revisit their old stomping grounds. Be prepared to meet a crazed ship surgeon, a deranged cook, a phantasmic captain and more during an experience that—try as you may—you won’t soon forget!

Ghosts Afloat is a family-friendly event that is appropriate for children age 7 or older. It will also feature seasonal shore-side activities and autumnal treats.

Apparently, I have a case of the Mondays. I saw this posted to Facebook earlier by Marshalls and I just got irritated. So I felt the need to blog away my sarcasm.

Need to transition to fall? Marshalls posted some helpful photos. Because, 1) you have never lived through a season change before and 2) you stand in front of your mirror in your summer dress thinking, "I really want to keep wearing this, but how? If only someone could teach me."

Phew, it's a good thing Marshalls showed me the ways....

Albeit, all I need to do is put on a sweater and booties and POOF! I'm ready for fall.

(Forget the fact I am still wearing a godawful dress that I should have never bought in the first place. And forget the fact my legs remain exposed to the cooler temps.)

The Red-tailed Hawk is a bird of prey weighing from 1.5 to 4 pounds and measuring 18 to 26 inches in length, with a wingspan from 43 to 57 inches. The Red-tailed Hawk displays sexual dimorphism in size, with females averaging about 25% heavier than males (the photo above is of a female).

The Red-tailed Hawk is carnivorous, and an opportunistic feeder. Its diet is mainly small mammals, but it also includes birds and reptiles. Prey varies with regional and seasonal availability, but usually centers on rodents, comprising up to 85% of a hawk's diet. Most commonly reported prey types include mice, voles, chipmunks, ground squirrels, tree squirrels and woodchucks.

Birds have evolved to adapt to different temperature ranges. On particularly hot days, birds, just like dogs, will open their bills and pant to help dissipate heat (as seen in the above photo).

I watch a lot of television for a single woman who should be hitting the town and meeting men. But whatever. Don't judge. I like to unwind after a long workday by drinking wine, hanging with my dog, and snuggling under a blanket. It's my thing and I know I can't be alone (... well, not alone in my infatuation with TV. I'm obviously alone watching the tube).

Here's a little fashion recap from the 2011 Emmy's hosted by Jane Lynch on FOX.

As a wise woman once told me, "We all need some sparkle." My personal favorites were all about the sparkle, shine, and glimmer Sunday night (oops, was it really on Sunday, I've lost a couple days of my life).

Anna Faris in ???

I tried searching online to find out what designer Faris was wearing. Okay, I didn't search too hard, but I didn't find out. I love this gown. I love the bling and I love the geometry. She also accessorized smartly with minimal jewelry. This dress doesn't need more bling; it is the bling.

Claire Danes in Oscar de la Renta

Danes' black-and-blue patterned, embellished strapless Oscar de la Renta column dress does not leave me bruised. This gown was my favorite of the night. Sparkle and pattern and blues -- What's not to love? Also Danes wears Barbara Bui shoes and Irit Design jewels. (Eye make-up is a bit heavy.)

Emily Blunt in Elie Saab

Blunt wore a midnight blue, plunging, tulle-embellished Elie Saab gown, Lorraine Schwartz jewels, Kelly Locke clutch, and Brian Atwood shoes. Pretty.

Evan Rachel Wood in Elie Saab

Elie Saab had two winners for the night (not Emmy's). This black sequin gown with cap sleeves and train was stunning on this actress... who I don't know. Wood also wore Fred Leighton jewels, Judith Leiber clutch, and Salvatore Ferragamo shoes.

Julie Bowen in Oscar de la Renta

A winner for her role on Modern Family, and also for this shimmering, plunging patterned Oscar de la Renta gown, Judith Leiber bag, and Neil Lane jewels. Score two for de la Renta!

Elisabeth Moss in Marchesa

Moss wore the wrong color (yet again) in this Marchesa gown with illusion embroidery. But the gown is gorgeous. The blush color just washes Moss out, however on the right person, this gown would be wonderful. (Not to mention, her hair is horrible!) Moss also wore Christian Louboutin shoes and Lorraine Schwartz gems.

The color red was very on trend for the 2011 Emmy's as well. But my two favorite red gowns on the red carpet were...

Lea Michele in Marchesa

I like Glee, but I'm not a fan of Rachel Berry or Lea Michele, but I gotta give her props when props are due. Michele kept it simple all over except with the body-skimming Marchesa gown with a striking bare back and Lorraine Schwartz gems. Snaps, but don't get cocky. Oh. Too late.

Nina Dobrev in Donna Karan

Nina who? I watch a lot of TV, hun (call back from the top of this blog) and I've never heard of ya. The Vampire Diaries star dresses for men and women in her blood-red Donna Karan gown, Brian Atwood peep-toes, and Neil Lane jewels.

Now... on to the worst....

Olivia Munn in Carolina Herrera

I regret to have to put both Carolina Herrara and Munn in the worst dressed category (as I'm sure they will be sadden I did so). But this dress is UGLY. It is worse than a bridesmaid dress. It's worse than a night gown. And it looks like it has been slept in or pitty screwed in the wedding reception's bathroom. Or both.

Katie Holmes in Calvin Klien

Keep it simple, stupid (aka Katie Holmes for this KISS lecture). Forget to change out of your beach cover-up and just throw your hair up into a messy bun after your day relaxing in the sand and sun. No one will notice as long as you belt the cover-up and put some make-up on.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Emilio Pucci

Paltrow has a do-no-wrong attitude (she acts, she sings, she dances, she cooks, she marries a rock star). Ugh. Over it. This dress is wrong in just one area. If the midriff wasn't bared, and the dress was one-piece, this could be a best dressed. The embroidery and the beading have great interest. It is not just another black gown on the red carpet. I just can't get past the cropped top. Come on!

Jayma Mays in Zuhair Murad

Eek! My eyes! This is hideous! Mays really doesn't know how to dress. She NEVER picks the right look. There's so much wrong: the color, the tulle, the skirt tiers, the dyed-to-match clutch, the illusion neckline, and the "pink satin sash(es)." Just no.

And finally.... one look that was so heinous, it didn't even walk the red carpet...

You spend most of your time at work, so help make sure your office is green by following these tips from Sierra Club.

Tip #1: Be bright about light.
Artificial lighting accounts for nearly half of the electricity use in office buildings, so make sure lights are turned off whenever no one's in a room — and invite in natural light wherever possible. Make it a policy, too, to buy Energy Star-rated lightbulbs and fixtures, which use at least two-thirds less energy than regular lighting, and install timers or motion sensors that automatically shut off lights when they're not needed.

Tip #2: Shut down that PC.
Computers in the business sector waste $1 billion worth of electricity per year, so make it a habit to turn off your computer — and the power strip it's plugged into — when you leave work for the day. Otherwise you'll still be burning energy even if you're not burning the midnight oil. During the day, setting your computer to go to sleep during short breaks can cut energy use 70%. Remember, screen savers don't save energy.

Tip #3: Print smarter (or not at all).
The average U.S. office worker can use 10,000 pieces of copy paper per year. To reduce your number, print double-sided whenever possible. Avoid color printing (hues are more likely to be toxic) and consider downloading Ecofont to save ink. Better yet, really think about whether you need that information down on sheets of dead trees, or whether having it on your computer is good enough.

Tip #4: Rethink office lunches
Much of your munching happens at the office, so keep your own mug, dishware, and flatware at your desk. This will fend off the temptation to use the paper and plastic disposables that are easy to grab in the lunchroom. If you're a workplace manager, provide reusable dishes, silverware, and glasses. Switch to eco-friendly coffees and teas, and buy organic and local food for parties and other events. And remember: Water fountains are always better than bottled water.

The Peregrine Falcon is a widespread bird of prey. A large, crow-sized falcon, it has a blue-gray back, barred white underparts, and a black head and moustache. The Peregrine is renowned for its speed, reaching more than 202 mph during its characteristic hunting stoop, making it the fastest member of the animal kingdom.

While its diet consists almost exclusively of medium-sized birds (doves, pigeons, songbirds), the Peregrine will occasionally hunt small mammals, small reptiles, or even insects. Reaching sexual maturity at one year, it mates for life and nests in a scrape, normally on cliff edges or, in recent times, on tall human-made structures.

The Peregrine Falcon became an endangered species in many areas because of pesticides, especially DDT. Since the ban on DDT from the early 1970s, populations have recovered, supported by large-scale protection of nesting places and releases to the wild

Schweddy Balls

Ben & Jerry's announced Wednesday that "Schweddy Balls" ice cream is on its way to store shelves across the country.

"In case you don't get the reference, the skit is a hilarious commentary on NPR's uniquely soothing sound. Alec Baldwin plays Pete Schweddy, a guest on a fake NPR show called Delicious Dish. Pete makes holiday treats like cheese balls, popcorn balls, rum balls, and his famous Schweddy balls. The skit is an exercise in double entendres," according to NPR.

The flavor is made up of vanilla ice cream with a hint of rum and is loaded with fudge covered rum balls and milk chocolate malt balls. (Blogger's Note: Bleck! I hate malt balls.)

Five things I love that start with the letter B...

1) Breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day, afterall. I feel like I could eat breakfast for any meal of the day. What's not to love?! I love eggs. I love yogurt. I love fruit. I love waffles. I love muffins. I love omelettes. I love smoothies. I (especially) love coffee.

2) Birds. Birds of prey fascinate me. Hummingbirds intrige me. Scavenger birds gross me out. Crows annoy me. I should get a bird feeder - but I would forget to fill it (just like I forget to water my plants). Daisy likes to chase birds.

3) Blankets. Wow, it got chilly outside (and inside) immediately on the unofficial end of summer! I have been laying under blankets since then. And thank goodness! My core body temperature does not like the cold, but certainly has not adjusted to the chilly temps yet. Hopefully we will have one more blast of warmth before I am forced to put my electric blanket on my bed.

4) Bedtime. (Apparently, I'm either tired or I want to go back to bed while typing this post.) Since graduation from college, I've basically adhered to a pretty regular bedtime (except on weekend). But it wasn't until I moved into my house that I was able to fall asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. Before, thoughts would be stirring keeping me up making my to-do list or noises outside or inside would keep me alert. Maybe work has gotten a little more relaxed (knock on wood) - I know I have at least gotten a better handle on things (knock on wood again). Maybe life has gotten less hectic. I'm not sure. But I definitely enjoy going to bed at a regular time and getting my sleep.

5) Brains. As I age, I really feel the effects of my brain slowing down. I often tell my mom we will be in the home at the same time, because I will be too looney to take care of her. I am forgetful. It worries me. But once I forget to worry is when I should really be concerned. I just need to be thankful for the brains I have now and hope it lasts long enough for me to pay off my home, before I forget where I live.

Five things I love that start with the letter A:

Art: This weekend was Gallery Night in Erie, which happens monthly. We made it to three exhibits. It was fun, albeit brief. And as I mentioned before, my mom is an artist. It was been a pleasure to decorate my house with a mixture of her photographs, my pictures, and a collection of other pieces of art I've purchased. I wish I had a larger income so I could make real art purchases. Maybe someday I will be a patron.

Artichokes: Although I haven never had an opportunity to eat fresh artichokes off the petal, I've always wanted to. Someday soon. I saw on the Food Network how to braise them in the oven. It looked simple enough. I love artichoke hearts - marinated or in water. I love adding them to salad. I love including them in a vegetable saute. I love making them the star in spaghetti sauce. And I love dips made with them. Mmm.

Accents: Seriously, why are people from outside the United States so cute? It's because of their accents.

Animals: I need to go to the Erie Zoo. Last year I went around this time. I really want to see the baby giraffe. I was lucky enough last weekend to see some of the educational birds of prey rehabilitated by Tamarack Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center. I will post more about that when I have a chance to upload my photos off my mom's camera (so I guess, expect those by December). It was so neat to be up close to these wild birds you only see from a great distance. Hopefully, I got some great photos.

August: I love the dog days of the summer. I can visit the beach every weekend. I can enjoy a good book in my antigravity chair in the backyard. I can't wait to relax and soak in this hot summer month. What do you mean it's over? WTF? Where did it go? No, I'm serious. How can it possibly be August 31?! It hasn't even been hot this month. Every weekend flew by. I did not use my antigravity chair at all this month. I only cracked open a book once. And I definitely am less tan now than I was at the end of July. I was enjoying the lower humidity and the lower electricity bills, but I wasn't ready for the heat and dew point levels to drop and stay there. Bah!

Thanks, Nicki, for covering your face and trying not to spread the disease. But it's probably best if you just go home and lay in bed until the crazy has passed. And burn those "clothes" and stapled on stuffed toys so you don't get reinfected. Get well soon!

The cactus in the foreground is Plateau Cholla or Whipple Cholla (or maybe they are the same thing). I do know the yellow buds on it is its fruits.

Preparedness

Even though Erie ranks number two in the country for safety from natural disasters, we are not immune to everything. In my opinion, it is important to prepare because once you have (overly) prepared, the event might not be so bad (think: Y2K). Or, at the very least, the impact to you from the event will be minimized.

According to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), you may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least three days. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours, or it might take days. In addition, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment, and telephones may be cut off for days, or even a week or longer.

FEMA's Recommended Items to Include in a Basic Emergency Supply Kit:

Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
Flashlight and extra batteries
First aid kit
Whistle to signal for help
Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
Local maps
Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger

Additional Items to Consider Adding to an Emergency Supply Kit:

Prescription medications and glasses
Infant formula and diapers
Pet food and extra water for your pet
Cash or traveler's checks and change
Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container.
Emergency reference material such as a first aid book or information from http://www.ready.gov/.
Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person. Consider additional bedding if you live in a cold-weather climate.
Complete change of clothing including a long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes. Consider additional clothing if you live in a cold-weather climate.
Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper – When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.
Fire Extinguisher
Matches in a waterproof container
Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels
Paper and pencil
Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children

Just another reason I love Erie. It's beautiful! Here's our Bicentennial Tower built to signify the city's 200th year in 1996. It is 187 feet tall and has 2 observation decks; it's located at the foot of State Street on Dobbins Landing.

Foto Friday: Rule of Thirds

The first principle of photographic composition is the Rule of Thirds. It is the basis for a well-balanced, interesting shot. The principle of the rule of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts:

With this diagram in mind, the rule of thirds helps to identify four important parts of the image you should consider placing points of interest in as you frame your photograph. It also gives you four ‘lines’ that are also useful positions for elements within your photo.

If you place points of interest at the intersections or along the lines, your photo will be more balanced and will enable a viewer of the image to interact with it more naturally. Studies have shown that when viewing images people’s eyes usually go to one of the intersection points most naturally rather than the center of the shot – using the rule of thirds works with this natural way of viewing an image rather than working against it.
In learning how to use the rule of thirds the most important questions to be asking of yourself are:

What are the points of interest in this shot?
Where am I intentionally placing them?

Lastly – keep the rule of thirds in mind as you edit your photos later on. Post production editing tools today have good tools for cropping and reframing images so that they fit within the rules. Experiment with some of your old shots to see what impact it might have on your photos.

Five things I'm loving right now...

1) The start of the school year. And I don't even have any kids (that I know of). Behrend is a buzz. Today is move-in day for the first-year students and while the campus isn't dead in the summer, it's really alive with energy, eagerness, and excitement. It's such a fun time for these new students and I am glad I get to be closer to the heart of campus this year to witness the fun.

2) The Beach. Family from Pittsburgh was in town this past weekend and I spent two days at Presque Isle enjoying the sun (didn't get burned), waves (didn't get wet), and sand (somehow I still got sand in my car!). We are so lucky! I just wish it wasn't a 40+ minute drive.

3) Netflix. I'm trying out streaming Netflix right now. And I'm loving it! I spent the last few days watching the first season of Mad Men. I didn't really start regularly watching the show until last season, but I caught a few episodes here and there. Now I get to see all of them and sorta cheat since I know the backstory and know what happens four seasons later. Once I get done watching Mad Men, I move on to Weeds and Nip/Tuck. Any other recommendations? P.S. I'm streaming through my BluRay player (Christmas gift from my parents) that I hooked up to my TV and connected to the internet all by myself. I'm just so proud.

4) Peach pie. My mom makes the most delicious pies. Seriously. The flaky crust (Betty Crocker 1960s recipe) is the best. Yesterday she made a homemade peach pie (made from local Pennsylvania peaches) and invited me over for a slice. YUMMO! If you don't know, peaches are my favorite fruit (I think I wrote that before). But actually blueberry is my favorite type of pie. But seriously, it was so scrumptious, I wasn't allowed to take a slice home with me (the family kept the rest for themselves).

5) House guests. Well, guest. There was just one person. But Daisy and I really enjoyed having Justina stay over for her birthday weekend. I don't get to play host very often, since I'm from Erie and most of friends are also from Erie. I wanted to try to make up a basket with towels, bottled water, and other stuff, like KT, but ran out of time - I barely got the house cleaned and the lawn mowed. Next weekend I will attempt to be a better host for the night.
